Questions & Answers
Applying and taking part
Joint applications are not possible, but you will be able to enter the name of up to two other students who you would like to travel together with.
To ensure that as many students as possible have the opportunity to take part in a study trip during their studies, we determine criteria and a list of priority groups for each trip, according to which we will fairly allocate the available places in the (not unlikely) event that the number of applications exceeds the total number of places available.
Applications are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis, so in the event that there are more students in a particular priority group than places remaining, these remaining places will be distributed by random selection.
We ask you to only apply for a place if you actually intend - and are able - to take part. However, you can cancel free of charge at any time until you receive your travel confirmation, which is issued once payment has been received in full. Once your travel confirmation has been issued, withdrawal will be subject to cancellation fees as per the terms and conditions. We strongly advise all participants to take out cancellation insurance.
Yes. The study trips are primarily educational and are an extra-curricular part of the legal language certificate programme. By taking part in a study trip you are committing to taking part in all organised activities during that trip. In the likely event that your study trip is subsidised, failure to take part in programme activities without reasonable justification may result in that subsidy being withdrawn.
Please seek our advice before applying if you have concerns about a health condition that may affect your travel or your stay.
Travel
The flight route and airline will depend on prices and availabilty at the time of booking and we will work with our booking partner to find the best option. We usually aim to fly directly with Ryanair between Nuremberg and London Stansted, but alternatives are Lufthansa (Nuremberg to London Heathrow via Frankfurt or Munich), KLM (Nuremberg to London Heathrow via Amsterdam), or exceptionally Lufthansa or British Airways (Frankfurt to London Heathrow with train connection from Erlangen / Nuremberg).
Depending on the airline, you will be able to take 20kg or 23kg of luggage.
Citizens of the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein need a valid passport. Identity cards are no longer accepted for entry into the UK. Your passport needs to be valid for the whole of your stay, though we recommend that your passport is valid for 3 months after the end of your stay. For trips commencing after 2nd April 2025, you will also need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA). We will let you know if you will need this for your study trip.
Citizens of other countries must have a valid passport to enter the UK, which must be valid for the whole of your stay, though we recommend that your passport is valid for 3 months after your stay and will also require an electronic travel authorisation (ETA). We will let you know if you will need this for your study trip. You should also check the UK government website for information on entry requirements and whether or not you need a visa.
We are happy to help with any queries, but would like to emphasise that students are personally responsible for ensuring that they fulfil the requirements for entry to the United Kingdom.
If you are a citizen of Germany, another EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you will not need a visa to travel to the UK.
If you are a citizen of any other country, you might need a visa (tourist or standard visitor visa). Please check on the UK Government website.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be in a three-star hotel in central London, includes breakfast and free WiFi, is close to shops and restuarants, and importantly just a short walk to local transport connections.
Accommodation is in twin or triple rooms, but single rooms (or double rooms with single occupancy) are usually available upon payment of a surcharge. This will, however, be 50% - 100% more expensive and is subject to availability. You will need to inform us when you apply for a place on a study trip that you would like a single room and confirm that you are happy to pay the surcharge.
Yes, you will be able to tell us who you would like to share a room with.
Money and payment
Payment is due in full within a few days of us offering you a place and you confirming that you wish to accept that place. Full payment is a requirement for securing your place on the trip, so it is important that you only apply if you are able to transfer the full amount by the due date.
It is necessary to request full payment because we are acting as the agent for the individual bookings (flights, accommodation, activities) for which payment is also required from us in advance. Any credit left in your account at the end of the trip will of course be refunded to you.
We always endeavour to obtain a contribution from the university towards the total cost of your trip and up to now the law school has paid €150.00 per person. There is no guarantee, however, and it may not be possible to confirm the subsidy amount by the time we process your application. We will always communicate any subsidies obtained as soon as these have been confirmed, and in any case the price we ask you to pay for your trip is the maximum total amount. Any subsidy granted after you have paid will be credited to your personal study trip account and refunded to you after your trip.
For 2025, the law school has confirmed a subsidy of 150 Euros per person.
No, the price of your study trip does not include any insurance, nor are we allowed to recommend specific insurance policies or companies.
We strongly recommend that participants take out the following insurance policies (or a policy that covers all of the following):
- Cancellation insurance (Reiserücktrittsversicherung)
- Travel contents insurance (Reisegepäckversicherung)
- Travel health insurance (Reisekrankenversicherung)
Our cancellation policy can be found on the terms and conditions page and sets out the conditions that apply to refunds in the event that you need to cancel your booking and withdraw from the study trip at any time. The later you cancel, the less we are likely to be able to refund.
We strongly advise all participants to take out cancellation insurance (Reiserücktrittsversicherung) to cover the full amount of the trip (including any subsidy that may also have to be repaid). Please check the terms and conditions of your insurance policy to make sure that it covers what you need and be aware that time limits often apply when the insurance policy is taken out after the travel booking has been made.
This is a difficult question to answer because it largely depends on what you would like to do in your free time and how expensive your tastes are.
You will need money for:
- meals and drinks (other than breakfast and the group meals included as part of the trip)
- admission fees (theatre, galleries, attractions - many museums in London are free though!)
- shopping (though please be aware that as the UK is now no longer an EU Member State there are restrictions on the value of goods you can bring back to Germany)
- public transport for additional trips* (in particular if you want to travel outside central London)
*The credit you will receive for public transport use will cover at least all trips in connection with programme activities, but may not be sufficient for all other trips made in your free time.
Brexit
There are no significant implications for study trip participants. Relevant changes are:
- You will need a passport to enter the United Kingdom (ID cards are no longer accepted)
- As the UK is no longer an EU Member State, it is a "third country" for customs purposes. This means that restrictions will apply to what you can take to the UK and bring back into Germany on your return.
The European Health Insurance Card (von deutschen Krankenkassen ausgestellte Europäische Krankenversicherungskarte (EHIC)) is still valid in the United Kingdom for urgent medical care. Nevertheless, we recommend that all participants take out private travel medical insurance.
Recognition as part of the Legal English programme
Yes, participation in a study trip can be shown on your certificate (Basic, Intermediate or Advanced level) as an extra-curricular activity.
Participation in the study strip on its own is not sufficient for recognition because this requires an individual achievement. Students who are aiming to complete the programme, i.e. achieve the advanced level certificate will, however, have the opportunity to take part in a seminar 'English Law in Practice' which will be organised after the study trip. This will involve a 15 - 20 minute presentation and a short written statement on an aspect of English law connected to the study trip programme.
The seminar can be used to replace either either the general English course usually required for admission to the certificate exam or the course 'Presenting Skills in the Legal Context'. Study trip participants will be given full details in due course.
